Studio vs Home: Where does your cat feel most brave?

As a cat photographer based in Cheshire, I’m often asked why I don't work from a traditional high-street studio.

I’ve met plenty of adventure cats and seasoned show cats who are perfectly happy to travel and wouldn’t make a fuss in a new environment. But what about the shy ones? What about the cats who rule their own living rooms but disappear the moment a stranger walks in or a carrier comes out?

Enter Minnie.

I visited Minnie for an In-the-home cat photography session. Minnie is a stunning black-and-white girl with the most incredible, soulful eyes. She lives in a busy household with two other feline siblings, and they each have their own space where they feel most secure.

The Hallway "Stakeout"

When I first arrived to set up, Minnie wasn't quite sure about the new face or the equipment I bought in. Instead of forcing a connection, I let her be. While she watched from the safety of her room, I started the session with her brother a super-confident Maine Coon who was more than happy to show her how it was done.

Before long, curiosity got the better of her. I spotted Minnie in the hallway, peeking around the corner to see what all the fuss was about. She was brave because she was on her own turf. She knew exactly where her exit routes were, which allowed her curiosity to outweigh her fear.

Bribes, Patience, and Purrs

Once she saw the treats in my hand, her confidence shine through. It took a few takes to get her used to the flash and the equipment, and I’ll be honest—there was a fair amount of bribing involved! As I always say, the quickest way to a cat's heart is through their belly.

Because we were in her home, Minnie could take breaks whenever she wanted. There was no stress, no travel panting, and no vet-visit anxiety. The result? A series of timeless portraits that capture the real Minnie.
