Photographing Scotland’s Celebrity Cats

When Lucy contacted me a year ago to book an adventure shoot for her two cats, I was absolutely thrilled. Even though I am based in Cheshire, she knew I regularly travel up to Scotland, so we spent months planning the perfect shoot for her duo in Dundee.

Meet Fifi, the gorgeous Bengal, and Bongo, a beautiful tabby. Bongo is partly blind, and his eyes have turned a striking, unique blue, yet he navigates the world like an absolute champ!

Our location? The stunning grounds of a National Trust property in Perth.

The Secret to Photographing Adventure Cats

People always ask me how I get such incredible, calm shots of cats out in the wild. The secret isn't fancy camera gear, it’s how I respect the cats.

When we started our walk, I used my three golden rules:

  1. I never force myself on the cats: I don't rush up to them or try to pet them straight away.

  2. I focus on the human: I walk along and chat with the owner, letting the cats get used to my voice and my presence.

  3. The owner is the boss: I scout the best spots for lighting and composition, and Lucy handled the cats safely on their harnesses and leashes.

For the first part of the walk, Fifi and Bongo quite happily sat like royalty on top of their backpack carriers as we explored.

Earning Their Respect

After an hour, we moved to a quiet area away from people and dogs. Lucy let them down to explore the forest floor. Because I hadn’t crowded them, something magical happened, the cats willingly walked over and started brushing against my legs.

There it is. The ultimate reward. They accepted me. Cats are incredibly intuitive; they knew I was a cat person, and I had earned their respect. We spent two brilliant hours exploring the park, and the pictures we got are absolutely fantastic.
